Lisbon on your doorstep

Lisbon is a genuinely unique city in Europe. Its ancient centre has the feel of a town, but in reality it is a major European hub for business and tourism. But most importantly it is alive. From its modern suburbs down to the Moorish central districts near the seafront, Lisbon is packed with the Portuguese at their most colourful and energetic.

Less than an hour from Praia D’El Rey, Lisbon is Europe's most westerly capital, and is set on seven hills beside the River Tagus. Its amazing charm comes from its strong links to the past, including renovated palaces, museums on every street, magnificent churches and an impressive castle. At its heart are wide, tree-lined avenues graced by Art Nouveau buildings, mosaic pavements and street cafes.

Because of the crowded layout of the city, visitors see Lisbon life up close and personal – the bustling street life interspersed with great views. The best way to discover Lisbon is to get lost in its narrow streets and up-and-down roads. But if you get tired don't worry; remember that Lisbon teems with both trams and metro stations.

Enough sightseeing? Then time for a little shopping therapy. Lisbon has it all, from the largest shopping centre on the Iberian Peninsula; old 'chic' areas and modern designer stores; flea markets and second hand shops.

And the nightlife is not to be missed. Start at sunset, finish at dawn; in between you can eat tapas and drink in one of the old quarter's lively restaurants before moving on to a Fado House to listen to singing that's the musical expression of the soul of Lisbon. Then pop into some of the best clubs in Europe and finish at one of the open-air cafes down by the river.
